The mission of SCI Woburn is to strengthen the community by connecting diverse individuals and organizations through civic engagement initiatives. The SCI Woburn website serves as a community resource connecting residents to volunteer opportunities, community events and resources.

Woburn AmericorpsGreetings and salutations, friends, family, citizens and neighbors!  A new generation of AmeriCorps volunteers has arrived in the Woburn community and we thought we'd take this opportunity to introduce them to the people we'll be connecting and interacting  with.  We have four  members serving  throughout the community this year in a number of different roles.  Scott Riley, a Woburn native, will be serving as an Outreach and Technology Coordinator at SCI's main office in Woburn as well as the Woburn Council of Social Concern.

Austin torpedoes farewellThe rain couldn't beat the band last Sunday as the Austin Torpedoes capped off a spectacular season of the Woburn Summer Concert Series at John F. "Jack" Marlowe Park.  The community gathered to dance and get their collective groove on to the diverse sound in Woburn center.  Drawing to a close the end of the concert series as well as saying farewell to the summer season, the band rocked the night away and narrowly beat out the rain that had delayed the concert earlier in the year.

SCI Woburn is coordinating Neighborhood Day 2008. Woburn residents are encouraged to participate in projects that improve their neighborhood while fostering connections among neighbors. This could include neighborhood beautification projects, helping a neighbor in need, or neighborhood social events.

The Austin TorpedoesThe Citizens Park Summer Concert Series concludes with its fifth concert on Sunday, September 21st, featuring The Austin Torpedoes. This concert has been rescheduled for Neighborhood Day Weekend from the original August 8th date. The concert will run from 5-7 p.m. in Citizens Park, located on Main Street (Route 38) across from the Common.  This concert is sponsored by Dunkin Donuts Woburn Center.

The Austin Torpedoes are a Boston area band who perform what its members like to call "good ol' American music." Their unique sound combines elements of many American musical styles such as blues, jazz, country, western swing, and rockabilly. In its unique way, the band interprets songs by a wide range of artists including: Duke Ellington, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, the Beatles, and Chuck Berry.

The core members of the band, Nicky Vegas, lead vocals and guitar, Don Barthelemy, drums and percussion, and Gary Secondino, bass guitar, have been playing together for almost twenty years.  The band found its missing ingredient in the guise of Seitu whose Hawaiian steel guitar further defined the band's sound. Audiences all over New England have enjoyed the band's combination of smooth vocals, distinctive steel guitar sound, and swinging rhythms. The Torpedoes unique sound will lift up your spirits and make you move your feet. There's nothing like...The Austin Torpedoes!

Home MakeoverDo you have a home in need of a fresh look?  Have you fallen on hard times and are unable to make needed cosmetic changes to your home?  The International Furniture and Design Association (IFDA) is taking applications for families in need of assistance to take part in a "Home Makeover" contest.  This contest is open to members from any community in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. One lucky winner will have a crew of approximately 25 professionals providing cosmetic improvements to their home over the course of two days (a Saturday & Sunday) in the month of October.

If you would like to be considered for this contest or if you would like to nominate a home in need, please click here and fill in your information.  The application deadline is September 11, 2008.  The winning home will be picked and notified by a committee shortly thereafter.

O'hAnleighThe Citizens Park Summer Concert Series wrapped up its fourth concert last Friday with óhAnléigh and their traditional Irish sounds. The concert was sponsored by Sean P. Coakley. Once again the weather was wonderful and graced us with clear skies, and many members of our community came out to enjoy the show.

Along with many original songs in the style of traditional Irish music, the three piece group treated us to various arrangements of both classic musical fair as well as contemporary songs. All of the music featured was preformed  on traditional instruments, some of which were hand made by the band. óhAnléigh had members of the audience clapping their hands and stomping their feet throughout the night.
